Alpacas and Llamas at dove farm
Alpacas belong to the Camelid family. They are frequently confused with llamas, although when viewed side by side, it is apparent that they are quite different animals. The llama is bigger and taller, with a lean frame – it is primarily used as a pack animal. The alpaca on the other hand, is smaller, more compact and generally more nervous in nature. They can be described as the ‘long-necked sheep of the Andes’. Alpacas and Llamas orginate from Chile, Peru and Bolivia.
Alpacas
We have been keeping alpacas at dove farm for many years. We currently have a small mixed herd, and have bought in a stud male to increase our numbers! Hopefully there will be a couple of babies by next year.

Alpacas are endearing, extremely sensitive creatures. They are often very shy, and generally more timid than llamas. This can make it difficult to get close to them , in the way that you would handle a pony or donkey. Read more at www.bas-uk.com
Alpacas are herd animals, and must never be kept on their own. Better to keep in groups of three or more. They need shearing once every year usually, with attention given to toe-nails and teeth. Alpacas do not have hooves, they have soft, padded feet.
The most frequent question we are asked, is ‘why do you keep alpacas?’ The reply is very simple: I saw some at a show, and took a liking to them.
